Lanjia Gua Bao, Gongguan: Five Ways to Choose Your Pork, and a Bowl of Si Shen Soup

This is a place I've been going to since my university days. Lanjia Gua Bao sits by the university gate in Gongguan, Taipei, and it made the Michelin Bib Gourmand list three years running, from 2019 through 2021.

Gongguan used to be a bit of a food desert. Back then we all thought Shida Night Market had a better food scene, especially that one lane lined with international restaurants. Lanjia is one of the few from those days still standing.

Five ways to choose your pork, and it was like that even back then

A gua bao is a folded steamed bun, and the filling is up to you: all fat (肥肉), all lean (瘦肉), half and half (半肥半瘦), mixed leaning lean (綜合偏瘦), or mixed leaning fat (綜合偏肥).

At my age I go for mixed leaning lean, plus a bowl of Si Shen Soup (四神湯), Taiwanese four-herb soup with pork intestine.

It still tastes the way I remember

The mixed leaning lean I got this time has less fat in it than what used to count as lean here. The soup tastes exactly the way I remember, steady as ever. I get the mixed one, intestine and tripe, for more texture.

My own favorite Si Shen Soup is still Huang Ji, in front of the Cisheng Temple in Dadaocheng, with two swirls of rice wine poured over the top.

Uncle's rating: Overall 4 | Food 4 | Atmosphere 4.5
They have kept the place clean for years, which earns the extra half point. Ceramic bowls would make it better still.
